Local competitions
Awards begin at local level, where nationally appointed panels judge all local residential entries. Each panel judges a number of categories throughout the country and marks each entry against the national score card and allocates local Gold, Silver, Bronze and Category Winner awards accordingly.
Panels comprise two judges – one building specialist and one design specialist.
Each local competition awards Quality Marks to outstanding entries and names a local winner in each category. Category winners are those awarded the highest points on the judge’s scorecard.
Each local competition names local award winners in each of the competition categories at a gala dinner attended by local industry, local and national sponsors, dignitaries, media and homeowners.
Twenty local awards evenings are held around the country from June to August. Click here to check the local event dates

How are National Gold Reserve Finalists determined?
Each year only a maximum of 100 residential entries receive Gold Reserve status. They are determined using the following process:
1. All of the Gold Award results throughout the country are pooled.
2. The top three Gold Award winners out of each category are automatically selected. Should a category have less than three Gold Awards, then only those will go through.
3. The remaining places (to make up the top 100) are given to the remaining highest
scoring properties regardless of what category they fall in.
Participants who receive a Quality Mark are welcome to use it in their personal marketing activities. These can be obtained by contacting Sarah Buchanan, House of the Year Project Assistant, on 04 494 5177, who will verify the Quality Marks you have been awarded, and send them to you electronically. |
